The Canadian Gold Roaring Grizzly Bear coin depicts one of the most celebrated wildlife in Canada, the grizzly bear. It is part of Canada’s coinage that was launched in 2010 to celebrate the diverse species of wildlife in the country under the “Call of the Wild Series”. The grizzly bear has an imposing sight especially when it is roaring. The coin contains exceptional detail and is low-mintage even as it harnesses the pure gold power in the depiction of the Canadian wilderness’ vast remoteness.

The Canadian Gold Roaring Grizzly Bear coin was minted in three versions with the last one being in 2016 at a low mintage of only 20 coins. The weight of the coin is 500 grams and this is why it also called the ½ kilogram pure gold coin. It has a width of 85 millimeters, a proof finish, and serrated edge. The face value of the coin 1,250 dollars. The gold purity is 99.99 percent, and therefore, 500 grams.

The hand-polished coin has a reverse design that was credited to Pierre Leduc who is an artist from Canada. The reverse contains the side-shot of the either roaring or growling grizzly bear facing to the right with its neckline emanating from the inner edge of the coin and the neck raised. Four sharp fans can be seen on the reverse of the coin. The background contains a roaring river snaking through a remote and rocky wilderness in the North of Canada where bushy undergrowth and scanty dotting of evergreens appears. The reverse also captures the sky above the bear.

The obverse bears Susanna Blake’s 2003 age-adapted effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The inscriptions, “ELIZABETH II” and “D · G · REGINA” appear on the top-left and top-right sides of the coin running clockwise. The inscription, “1250 DOLLARS” runs anticlockwise at the bottom of the coin below the Queen’s effigy. Investors and collectors trading in this coin do not pay VAT or sales taxes. The Royal Canadian Mint, which is a crown corporation owned by the Government of Canada mints the Canadian Gold Roaring Grizzly Bear coin.
